About Pokemondex

What is Pokemondex?

Pokemondex is an independent, fan-built Pokémon database covering all 1,350+ Pokémon across nine generations. It exists because the reference sites most players grew up with are excellent at one thing — telling you what a Pokémon's numbers are — and mostly silent on the thing people actually want to know next, which is whether those numbers add up to anything worth using.

So every Pokémon page here carries the full data set you would expect — base stats, typing, abilities, complete move lists, evolution conditions, encounter locations — and then an editorial layer on top of it: biology and physical characteristics, behaviour and natural habitat, a competitive assessment, name and design origins, breeding details, and a short editor's verdict that says plainly what the Pokémon is good for.

How the content is made

There are two distinct layers on this site, and it is worth being clear about which is which.

The reference data — stats, types, moves, evolution chains, egg groups, encounter tables — is structured game data. It is not opinion, and it is not rewritten. Where the games disagree with each other across versions, the page says so rather than flattening it into one number.

The editorial layer is written per Pokémon, not stamped out from a template. That is a deliberate constraint: a verdict that could be generated by swapping a name into a sentence is worth nothing to the person reading it. It also means the coverage is honest about its own gaps — the newest Mega Evolutions, whose mechanics cannot yet be verified against a released game, deliberately carry no verdict at all rather than a confident guess. An empty space is more useful than a fabricated one.

Alongside the per-Pokémon pages there is a long-form guide library covering the mechanics that span the whole series — catch rate maths, breeding and shiny hunting, EV and IV training, type matchups beyond the basic chart, held items, status conditions and the battle gimmicks each generation introduced.

Where the data comes from

• Core Pokémon, move, ability and evolution data is sourced from established open Pokémon data projects and reconciled against the games themselves.
• Trading Card Game listings, card images and market prices are drawn from published card-market pricing data and refreshed daily.
• Pokédex flavour text is quoted from the main-series games it originally appeared in, credited to that game.
• Editorial assessments are our own and are clearly separated from the game data they discuss.

About the editor

Pokemondex is created and maintained by Paul Lovell, a lifelong Pokémon player. Paul has played Pokémon GO since launch and the core series across every Nintendo platform it has appeared on — the Game Boy (Red, Blue & Yellow), Game Boy Color (Gold, Silver & Crystal), Game Boy Advance (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen), Nintendo DS (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black & White), Nintendo 3DS (X & Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon) and the Nintendo Switch (Let's Go, Sword & Shield, Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, Legends: Arceus and Scarlet & Violet).

That span matters for a site like this one. Judgements about whether a Pokémon is worth using, how a mechanic changed between generations, or why a design reads the way it does are not things you can derive from a stat table — they come from having played the games the mechanics shipped in.

He built Pokemondex to bring complete, accurate game data together with genuine editorial detail in one place, refreshed as new games and Pokémon are released.

Accuracy and corrections

Pokémon spans nine generations, dozens of games and decades of mechanical changes, and some of it is genuinely contested among players. Mistakes get through. If you find something wrong — a stat that does not match the game, an evolution condition that is out of date, a competitive claim that no longer holds — please report it and it will be corrected. Corrections are treated as a priority over new content.
