Pokémon Forms & Variants

Many Pokémon have alternate forms — regional variants, Mega Evolutions, Gigantamax forms, and more. These forms often have different types, stats and abilities compared to their base form. Browse all form variants and regional differences below.

Regional variants are the most common type of alternate form. Introduced starting with Alolan forms in Pokémon Sun & Moon, these give an existing Pokémon a new type, stat spread and appearance to reflect how it adapted to a different environment — Alolan Vulpix became Ice-type in the snowy Alola region, while Galarian Ponyta picked up a Fairy typing in the Wild Area of Galar. Hisuian and Paldean forms followed the same idea in later games.

Mega Evolution and Gigantamax work differently: both are temporary, battle-only transformations rather than permanent changes. A Mega Evolution requires holding the matching Mega Stone and triggers for the whole battle once activated, usually boosting a Pokémon's stats and sometimes changing its type or ability. Gigantamax forms only appear for Pokémon caught or bred in a Max Raid Den (or with the Gigantamax factor) and revert once Dynamax ends.

These alternate forms are distinct from standard evolution, where a Pokémon permanently changes species — by leveling up, using an evolution stone, trading, or meeting a condition like high friendship or a specific time of day. Forms and variants instead keep the same species identity while changing its type, stats or appearance.
